Communities often find themselves in need of infrastructure improvements but lack the funding to complete the needed improvements. Significant funding opportunities are available under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). With the signing of BIL in November 2021, communities across America have received billions of dollars to rebuild failing infrastructure. As of July 2023, BIL has directed $15.6 billion to approximately 1,300 projects in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The $15.6 billion has funded water, wastewater, broadband, airport, road, and bridge improvement projects. BIL funds have also enabled communities to upgrade their transit systems, install E.V. charging stations, and improve or expand power infrastructure. In addition, communities have used BIL funds to clean up and redevelop vacant industrial sites and make their communities and infrastructure more resilient to natural disasters and severe weather impacts.
BIL Funding Totals in the Northwest
This fall, the federal government will release notices of funding opportunities for 19 different programs. Agencies releasing NOFOs this fall include the Environmental Protection Agency, FEMA, and the Department of Energy. However, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will offer 12 funding opportunities. Over the next three months, it will accept applications to construct new bridges, relieve traffic congestion, improve transportation technology, make rail crossings safer, support solar power development, and much more.
